PTA
Supports Safer Schools Legislation
On Monday, January 8, 2007, PTA officially endorsed the Safe Schools
Against Violence in Education (SAVE) Act (HR 297), introduced by Rep.
Carolyn McCarthy of New York. The SAVE Act calls for increased
consistency, accountability, and transparency in the reporting
requirements for school safety. While most schools are considered to
be very safe, the standards for evaluating school safety vary
considerably, making it difficult for parents to know how safe their
children's schools really are.
If the SAVE Act becomes law, all public schools will be held to
the same standard, a standard that will make sure that schools provide
more information to parents and explain parents' rights in greater
detail. With the recent surge in school violence, PTA is pleased this
issue is being taken seriously in the halls of Congress. PTA believes
this is the first of many steps needed to protect our children from
school violence and other types of harassment in schools.
